NSPCC Campaign Listen Up, Speak Up

NSPCC have launched a new campaign that aims to give people a little bit knowledge to keep children safe.

Every year, half a million children suffer abuse and neglect across the UK. The A new campaign from the NSPCC called “Listen up, Speak up” wants to change this with the message: ‘A little bit of knowledge can help keep lots of children safe.’

Listen up, Speak up is designed with a public audience in mind and it doesn’t replace safeguarding training for professionals.

Test and learn

The pilot phase of the campaign launched on Tuesday 10 January and features a short online training for people to understand how to play their part to keep children and young people safe from abuse or neglect.

It will run for six weeks  until 19 February promoted via social media.

How the campaign works

1) Watch the video

People watch an inspiring video, which will be promoted on social media (www.nspcc.org.uk/support-us/listen-up-speak-up) and share with friends and family

2) Take a short training

The video prompts viewers to sign up for a free, ten-minute online training: ‘Connect the DOTS’. It will aim to show adults what to do if a child or young person needs help, and where to go to seek advice and support.

3) Emails with simple steps

After the training, people will receive weekly emails with tailored content detailing different, small simple, steps to take to help prevent child abuse or neglect before it starts. This includes topics like learning about online safety and keeping children safe in sport.

Aims

Once participants have completed the training they will:

  • learn how to spot the signs of child abuse and neglect.
  • know the steps to take if they’re concerned about a child
  • know where to go to access our services and resources.

By giving everyone a bit of extra knowledge, we can raise awareness of the part everyone can play to “Listen up, Speak up”. We also want to help parents and carers understand how to reach out if they – or someone they know – needs support.
