The 2023 sessions will continue to be delivered in a mini virtual format and are designed for those working with children and young people.

Most masterclasses will take place between 12:00 noon and 1:00 pm on the first Wednesday of each month with the exception of the Masterclasses in January and April.. Each session will cover a different theme. Click on the month below to read more:

Counter Terrorism
Description
Sgt Ben Hallewell, North Yorkshire’s Prevent Sergeant for Counter Terrorism Policing North-East, presents an overview of the North Yorkshire Counter Terrorism local profile, focusing on the threat and risk that is relevant to our communities. Prevent protects the public from terrorism by stopping people becoming terrorists or supporting terrorism, and Counter-Terrorism Local Profiles (CTLP) are central to the effective delivery of that preventative mission. CTLPs articulate threat and risk at Official Sensitive and are the vehicle to drive coordinated and proportionate activity across all organisations with a statutory responsibility for delivery of Prevent. The strength of Prevent locally relies upon robust local governance and the CTLP therefore plays a central part in shaping and focusing the resources and actions of local partners into areas where the risk is greatest, in order to safeguard communities from terrorism and comply with the expectations of the Counter Terrorism & Security Act 2015 (Prevent Duty).

Drink Drug Hub

Outline
North Yorkshire Horizons has created a website packed with videos, guides, workbooks, and tools from across the web to help anyone affected by drink and drugs – including young people and those who help them. Called Drink Drug Hub, this new website can be used by workers of all disciplines, young people themselves, as well as their family members.

The session will introduce the new website, provide a demonstration of its key features, and will include a short presentation exploring how many children use drugs, the drugs they use, the associated risks, and the pitfalls professionals face when trying to support young people who use drink and drugs.

Sexual Abuse Referral Centre (SARC)
Outline
Paediatric Sexual Abuse Referral Centre (SARC) – What is a SARC?
Description
The session will focus on the service’s pathways in cases for both paediatric acute and non-recent sexual abuse. In addition, focus on the importance and facilities available for children and young people who has disclosed non-recent sexual abuse and the support that can be provided at the SARC. Many professionals when they think of SARC and the service offered, many think of forensics and the evidential aspect, however the service is so much more than that. The SARC focus on the holistic approach to a child or young person who has been sexually assaulted or abused and the physical, mental, and emotional aspects to that, it is not always about the forensics!

Counter Terrorism Update
Description

Details
Healthy relationships between parents/carers are an important focus for all Practitioners who work with children and families. The quality of the relationship between parents/carers, specifically how they communicate and relate to each other, has a significant influence on effective parenting and children’s outcomes. The New Stronger Relationships – Parental Conflict Masterclass for Practitioners consists of a snapshot of why discussing conflict and relationships within work with our families is so important, there will be a mixture of theory and practice which will focus on the impact that frequent intense and poorly resolved conflict has on children ad young people.

The Masterclass will enable Practitioners to:
• Recognise the effects of parental conflict on children and young people
• Understand the difference between parental conflict and domestic abuse
• Identify the stressors that can trigger parental conflict

This session looks at research into Adverse Childhood Experiences and goes on to identify how we can counterbalance damage by increasing positive experiences and building resilience. This course is delivered by Early Help Consultants, NYC

The presentation will outline why it is important that we are able to recognise ACES and how schools, parents and communities can play integral roles in identification and counterbalancing. We look at toxic stress and the affect that it can have on the child’s developing brain, as well as how to reduce the damage done and support children in our care. The 5 Pillars of Resilience is used to reframe our thinking and provides us with ideas and examples of how we can teach our children to be resilient.

The ASK Suicide Prevention Workshop specifically addresses suicide risk in children and young people aged 5-15 and gives participants developmentally appropriate strategies and tools to identify children and young people at risk of suicide and quickly gather and organise key details needed to assess risk and inform safety planning.

Description
The training is provided by an accredited ASK suicide prevention trainer who will be provided with the delegates name and email contact to ensure delegates can access the pre-learning modules and the online training sessions.
Delegates will:
– Learn about the risk factors and warning flags signalling that a child may be at risk of suicide.
– How a child’s death understanding is related to suicide risk.
– What research tells us about a child’s risk and protective factors.
– Practice using an evidence based brief screening tool that anyone can use to match a child who needs support or help to the most appropriate helper.
– How to organise what you know about a child to inform planning for immediate safety and longer-term support.
– How to overcome challenges and partner with parents and other professionals.
– Learn from an experienced facilitator using current practice from clinical practice and published research.
The training consists of:
– Two self-paced learning modules that must be completed before the online training and will take about an hour in total, including a quiz that helps consolidate the learning in preparation for the two interactive online training sessions
– Attend two online training sessions, over two consecutive days which will be a mixture of video case studies, facilitator guided simulations, small group discussions, and opportunities to apply your new knowledge using helpful tools and resources.
– Upon completion of all components, participants receive a certificate and a pocket reference card.

This course covers the different components of the Joint Agency Response in response to a child death, the role and responsibilities of different professionals and provides the skills to explain to families the purpose of the process.
Description
This course explains the statutory purpose of the Child Death Overview Panel. This includes the different components of the Joint Agency Response in to a child death and subsequent child death review. It touches on the role of the key worker and the Coroner and informs professionals on how best to support to bereaved families. In additon, professionals will be provided with an overview of the National Child Mortality Team and local data.

Contextual Safeguarding is an approach to understanding, and responding to, young people’s experiences of significant harm beyond their families.  The session will look at what is meant by contextual safeguarding, consider sources of extra-familial harm including child sexual exploitation (CSE) and child criminal exploitation (CCE) plus explore practical steps that can be taken to keep children and young people safe.

This session is aimed at education settings in line with Keeping Children Safe in Education.  All staff, but especially the Designated Safeguarding Lead (or Deputy), should be considering the context within which incidents and/or behaviours of concern occur.  This is known as contextual safeguarding, which simply means assessments of children should consider whether wider environmental factors are present in a child’s life that are a threat to their safety and/or welfare.

Description
This training focuses on the impact on children who live in a family where domestic abuse is present, giving delegates opportunities to reflect on values, beliefs & practice when working with these children & families. Includes updates for DSLs & Deputies.

An overview of drug and alcohol use among young people in North Yorkshire, including an examination of the effects and risks of the most commonly used substances.
Outline
This session offers an overview of the local situation regarding young people’s drug and alcohol use, practical up-to-date information on the most commonly used drugs, information on the legal, health and social risks of substance misuse, plus details of where to get further information. This course is delivered by Cheryl Parker – Substance Misuse Officer, Youth Justice Service.
Description
This session will look at current drug trends amongst young people in North Yorkshire and will look in detail at the effects and potential risks of some of the more commonly used substances including cannabis, cocaine, amphetamines and ketamine. We will also look at other risks associated with substance misuse, including the legal implications and criminal exploitation, as well as considering approaches to harm reduction.

Outline
The course will provide an understanding of Early Help Assessments (EHAs) and Team Around the Family Meetings (TAFs) which are central to the NYC Early Help Strategy.  Are you concerned about a child in your care?  Identify what support the child and the family might need by using the Early Help Assessment tool to explore what’s going on for them and how to help their situation.

This session will help you understand how the Signs of Safety approach can be used to identify the needs of children and their families. It will give you the background of EHA/TAFs, who should complete them and when. We will discuss the importance of capturing the voice of the child as part of the process.

North Yorkshire has a high proportion of Service children and these children often face a number of challenges in their lives including higher than average transitions and parents being away from the family home for extended periods of time. These challenges have been shown to impact Service children’s well-being and long term outcomes in comparison to their non-service peers. For example the Growing Up in North Yorkshire survey revealed that 44% of Service pupils had a low measure of resilience compared to 38% of their peers. The #TalkSuicide campaign has been created y the Humber, Coast and Vale Health and Care Partnership to reduce the stigma around talking about suicide by raising awareness of free suicide prevention training available from the Zero Suicide Alliance.

The Zero Suicide Alliance is a partnership of Health Service Trusts, businesses and individuals who are committed to suicide prevention in the United Kingdom and beyond.  The Alliance has a free, 20 minute online suicide prevention training programme.  The aims of this training are to: enable people to identify when someone is presenting with suicidal thoughts / behaviour; help them to speak out in a supportive manner; empower them to signpost the individual to the correct services or support.

The NYSCP coordinate safeguarding training to colleagues working with children and young people in North Yorkshire in line with its Learning and Improvement Framework (WT2018). Training focuses on themes identified in the North Yorkshire Safeguarding Children Board (NYSCP) Business Plan, Practice Guidance, Procedures, learning from reviews, audits and national and local guidance.

Training is designed to offer colleagues across agencies an opportunity to share experiences and improve their skills in operational practice, and ensures that training and learning impacts positively on future practice and ultimately improves outcomes for children.

For face to face delivery courses, it is important that delegates attend for the duration of the course and arrive and leave at the specified times.

Demand for NYSCP courses is high and as a result, some applicants may not be able to obtain a place. In order to ensure that we achieve maximum attendance for our courses agencies must either:

– Provide us with a minimum of 7 days’ notice of any cancellation in order for the place to be offered to another candidate. Where a booking is cancelled less than seven days prior to the course, except in circumstances of sickness, the cancellation fee will be £50 for one half day training and £50 per day where the course lasts two days or more. Candidates who are unable to attend due to sickness must inform the NYSCP Business Unit immediately they are aware of their inability to attend by emailing nyscp@northyorks.gov.uk; or

– Send another colleague to attend the course in the place of the original delegate.  This is acceptable practice & no charge will be made.  Where this is the case the substitute delegate must inform the course tutor and the course register should be amended to recognise the substitution.

By signing up to complete a course delegates must be aware that where they do not attend a NYSCP delivered course and have failed to comply with points 1 or 2 above they will incur a cancellation charge of £50.
